Koziel’s Corner: What you should be watching on Netflix (December edition)

Olivia Koziel, The Delphi Staff, Class of '19

Here are December 2018’s binge-worthy offerings from Netflix:

First, Daredevil just returned for another season with many familiar faces, villains and friends alike. The series picks up where Marvel’s The Defenders left off: with Matt Murdock close to death. You see Murdock struggle to pick himself back up after having a building fall on top of him. Shortly into the series, Wilson Fisk is reintroduced as the main antagonist in the story. As always, the series takes on dark and hard to talk about topics like losing one’s identity. The season is a must watch for fans of the Marvel series. Unfortunately, it is Daredevil’s last season as all of the Marvel original series are leaving Netflix for good. However, do not fear!  You can revisit Daredevil whenever you wish since the series will not be taken off of the streaming service.

Second, Maniac is a new show on Netflix starring Emma Stone and Jonah Hill. The show has a Sci-Fi feel to it, although you cannot have Jonah Hill appear in a project without a little bit of comedy. The humor is dark and quirky, and it has an interesting mix between smart and quick humor as well as some dull-witted humor.  However, if you are a fan of his other movies, you might not like this show because the comedy is a lot darker than you might be used to. Maniac is a mix between the future and the past with 80’s fashion and technology but with a futuristic feel. The show is about two people who volunteer for drug research and are pulled into some very interesting adventures. It takes the two characters into new and different worlds that they should not be able to explore. This show is another hit for Netflix with a strong cast and an original, refreshing plot.

Lastly, premiering back in October was The Chilling Adventures of Sabrina, which has been taking over Netflix with its dark humor and charming characters. Sabrina is a young girl who struggles with finding her place in the world. She is forced to choose between the mortal world and the world of witches. The show is about Sabrina finding her way through both worlds and trying to keep them separate from each other. Sabrina tells a dark tale that takes on many different topics including the struggles that minorities face. It also focuses on the supernatural world in which her family lives, where viewers get to see a world of magic and organized religion. The show does have some dark moments, so it is not for the light-hearted. The series takes place in an interesting and fresh world that is unlike anything else that is currently on Netflix. The series has been approved for its second season, which is already in production, and a Christmas special was released for this past holiday season.
