Ellen Gordon

Ellen Gordon is running to represent Milford Borough on the Del Val BOE.

Ellen Gordon: Milford Borough

Milford Borough resident and incumbent Board of Education president, Ellen Gordon, hopes to continue her role on the board after the vote on Nov. 8.

Gordon enjoys being involved with the school and believes her years of experience differ her from other candidates. Gordon feels as helping the community is key to being a good BOE member.

“We have a responsibility to serve the public,” said Gordon. “I am focused on serving all students and seeing the big picture when making decisions on recommendations by the superintendent.”

Gordon shows her support for Del Val by attending as many student and staff events as possible. She does not have a personal agenda, or a Political Action Committee managing her campaign, as she makes the school and community her top priority.

“I am passionate about both preserving and further developing academic and extracurricular programs offered at DVRHS,” said Gordon.

In regards to important issues throughout the school, Gordon identified learning loss after COVID as a main concern. Gordon wants to be sure to assist students and staff in overcoming this problem.

“[The BOE must] promote the continued use of formative assessments to identify student learning levels and make adjustments to lessons to achieve desired learning goals,” said Gordon. “[We also need to] provide instructional staff with the resources they need to assist students with achieving desired learning goals.”

Gordon also hopes to focus on the well-being of the staff and students, both mentally and physically, filling staff vacancies and creating safe environments for students to feel comfortable.

Gordon believes that one of the most important focuses for Del Val is making sure that students are “career and college ready.”

“The students need to develop life skills that allow them to make informed decisions, solve problems, think critically and creatively, communicate effectively, build healthy relationships and thrive in a positive manner,” said Gordon. “Course offerings and curriculum need to assist students in developing these skills.”

Gordon supports the need for a balanced budget, and costly projects need to be voted on with the Del Val community in mind. Gordon hopes to maintain existing programs and prioritize safety/security moving forward. In addition, she thinks DVRHS should be using all of its resources to their fullest potential.

“It is important that we provide programs and facilities that allow us to attract and retain both students and staff,” said Gordon.

The future of Del Val and how the school looks to the community is crucial. Gordon feels as the majority of Del Val students already participate in helpful activities and is proud that the school provides many students with fair opportunities to thrive.

“Del Val already stands out from other schools,” said Gordon. “I would work with the superintendent to develop district goals that increase academic achievement, promote a positive social and emotional learning environment and continuously assess building security to make needed updates.”

If you would like to see candidate Ellen Gordon return as BOE president, Milford residents can vote for her on Nov. 8.
