When does the Christmas season start?

With much debate about when the Christmas season begins, Erin Bates and Sadie Swanson share their beliefs on the topic. Does the season start on Nov. 1 or Dec. 1?

Dec. 1 makes the most sense for when the season should begin. Each major holiday deserves about a month to celebrate. Halloween celebrations begin in October, Easter begins in early spring and Thanksgiving celebrations take place in November, which leaves December for Christmas.

November is still considered fall to most people and Thanksgiving is a fall holiday. So when Christmas comes to mind, it’s a winter holiday.

Those that begin celebrating Christmas on Nov. 1 take away from the excitement of the holiday. Christmas music begins to play, and everyone starts putting up their trees. By the time Christmas comes around, the music has gotten old and turning the tree on has become a chore.

When Thanksgiving comes around and the tree is up, it takes away from the fall holiday; the cornucopia on the table doesn’t match the Christmas tree very well.

“I’m a big Christmas guy, but I can admit when people do too much. There’s no reason to fully wrap your house up with Christmas decoration on Nov. 1. Let fall have its moment, and also let Thanksgiving be celebrated,” senior Carter Gordon said.

When people start their holiday season early, they seem to be less excited by the time Dec. 25 arrives. Many that have started to celebrate early have said that they get annoyed once Christmas Day comes around.

“When the Christmas music starts on November 1, and continues until Dec. 25, that’s almost two months of the same couple of songs, it’s just annoying after the first 3 weeks of the same thing on the radio consistently,” senior Lillie Margotta said.

There’s no official start to the Christmas season and there is no right way to celebrate; it depends on what you like and what you do to celebrate the season.

“Nov. 1 is way too early for me to be excited for Christmas,” said Gordon. “I understand where some people get excited, but it shouldn’t start until Dec. 1, or at least the day after Thanksgiving,”.

Nov. 1 is the better start for Christmas season, as this date allows ample time for getting into the holiday spirit.

People who celebrate the holidays early are said to be generally happier people. Tapping into the excitement of the holidays before the rest allows for the early celebrators to get the most out of the Christmas positivity.

“I am always happy around Christmas. My family celebrates nearly every holiday, especially Christmas, early and I see their moods instantly improve when the house is decorated around the holidays,” freshman Mia Gonzalez said.

For many, putting up Christmas decorations early is a way for people to reconnect and reminisce on their childhoods.

“Every year I start my Christmas decorating the day after Halloween. Christmas brings me back to a time when I was growing up when I had nothing to worry about,” junior Jordyn Zollinger said. “Christmas reminds me of the happiest moments of my childhood. I love decorating early for Christmas.”

It makes the most sense to string your lights and put up your Christmas tree in the beginning of November. It is the most cost effective and practical option. As most people know, Christmas decorations can become costly. The best way to get the most out of your purchase is if you start decorating sooner.

The Christmas season is the primary time for giving back to others and showing our appreciation for them. The smile from your family and friends that you receive in return for buying them gifts or wishing them a happy holiday is a precious moment that will never be forgotten.

Dec. 1 is far too late to start celebrating. Christmas is the big phenomenon at the end of each year. Why only get the month of December to celebrate this monumental holiday when you could be celebrating the whole month of November too?
