Red 3 is a synthetically manufactured dye that is used in thousands of the foods people consume. It’s used by companies seeking a fluorescent red color in their food items. On Jan. 15, 2025 this controversial dye was banned from future use in the food industry.
The news of the recent ban has sparked discussions about what the future holds for other food dyes, such as Red 40 and Yellow 5. The main argument around these dyes is what they consist of. Red 3, for example, has petroleum in it, which alarms many scientists. Several studies have been conducted and shown that Red 3 poses significant health risks. ADHD is a common side effect, specifically in children.
This dye also doesn’t only harm humans, but animals as well. Animals who consume Red 3 are at a higher risk for thyroid cancer, especially dogs and male rats.
Although fingers were pointed at the Biden Administration, the decision to ban this controversial dye was actually made by The Food and Drug Administration. Red 3 has been a major issue in the food industry since 1969, and the dye has already been banned in many places outside of the U.S., like Europe, Australia and Japan.
However, the effects of this won’t be seen for two years. Red 3 containing foods won’t be taken off shelves immediatly. Food companies have a deadline of January 2027 to re-formulate their products and remove Red 3 from the ingredients.
Now that Red 3 has been banned, what other synthetic dyes in the food and beverage industry do you think could be next?
