As the fire alarms start to become outdated, Del Val has to update them to a new system. This process will cost the school $926,000, however, the school could get $314,840 in funding from the Debt Service Aid. Voting in favor of Del Val’s students and staff should be a priority.
The only requirement for Del Val to be able to obtain state aid is for the community to vote yes to the referendum in the Nov. 3 election. This vote will help to allow Del Val to apply for funding for the project without raising taxes.
Without this state aid, the funding will come fully out of the school district’s capital reserve account, which is an account set aside for capital improvements. A yes vote will save the school over $300,000, which will go towards future projects.

There are no negative effects for voting yes to the referendum. It will save the school money and free up funding for other needs without increasing taxes. Voting no may negatively impact the school’s ability to fund projects in the future.

The editorial board voted yes for the referendum. The results of the vote are: 14 yes, 1 no and 1 abstained.
