Delaware Valley’s literary magazine “Changing Perspectives” is nominated for one of the most prestigious awards a magazine can achieve: the CSPA Crown.
The Columbia Scholastic Press Association is known as the standard for student journalists and student newspapers across the country. Each year, CSPA gives out both Gold and Silver Crowns to newspapers, magazines, yearbooks and other online media.
The deadline for Spring submissions was June 16, 2023, and the results will be announced in March 2024. Del Val is one of the 213 finalists out of 672 submissions from across the country and beyond.
Advised by Molly Esposito, Del Val’s Lit Mag has come a long way. “Changing Perspectives” won first place in the Annual Scholastic Press Contest and was one of six other New Jersey schools who were featured in the Recognizing Excellence in Art and Literary Magazines: First Class.
In late Jan. or Feb., the lit mag starts putting its media together to be ready for the printers by May.
Lit mag is a club at Del Val, so all the work is done during lunch or after school. Usually, they have a staff of under 10 students. Sorting through every submission and finding the perfect combination of media for their magazine, the staff proves that it is small but mighty.
Each year “Changing Perspectives” selects a subtitle that reflects the theme.
“To find our theme, we look at all submissions and find the common mood in all of them, and go off of that,” said Esposito.
This year, the subtitle was “Cycles.”
“There were lots of feelings of life, death and rebirth,” said Esposito. “Looking through the writing, the name just felt fitting.”
Esposito’s advised her first magazine in 2005, and ever since they’ve been improving. Whether it is the print, size or layout, the literary magazine is constantly evolving.
It’s no big shocker that the lit mag staff works hard and publishes amazing work, but these awards and recognitions emphasize that work.
Congratulations to Esposito and the lit mag team.
