Sports have become a huge distraction to students across the country, particularly at Del Val. They have been causing a decrease in students getting into college, and many parents of Del Val students have spoken out against this issue as well. They are outraged that their children can no longer get into their dream schools.
“Before my child got into sports, she was on the track for Havard,” local parent Karen Williams said. “Now, she just got rejected from RVCC because she was playing field hockey.”
Many other parents have been running into the same issues over the past few years. However it has finally come to our community’s attention that the issue boiled down to sports. People have taken the matter into their own hands, as the school has yet to comment on the subject.
Both parents and community members have begun protesting and releasing petitions to remove all sports at Del Val. If this new policy is put in place, students will be able to focus solely on their academics and not have to worry about if they will play well later that day.
A bigger issue came up as well when discussing the matter: what about the children who play sports outside of school?
“When I found out that sports were the cause for my child’s failing grades, I immediately pulled her out of all of the sports that she played,” Williams said. “I think the biggest issue was within the high school, but travel sports didn’t aid the issue.”
After all this time, parents and community members were deceived to think that it was the students’ issue for not doing well in school. Now they realize that the issue was these sports that they were told would make their children perform better in school.
