International Club started the new school year on Sept. 18 with their first club meeting. Club advisor, Debra Billmann, is ready to get the club up and running in the community for the 2024-25 school year.
“I’m most excited for the events that incorporate the whole school, like our gingerbread house contest and the multilingual valentines,” Billmann said.
During the holidays, International Club hosts a gingerbread house contest in The Commons based on different countries’ styles of architecture. In February, students can purchase valentines for each other in various languages.
The first meeting focused on Hispanic Heritage Month, from Sept. 15 to Oct. 15. A collaborative poster was chosen for the club’s bulletin board. In the days after the meeting, students went down to Billmann’s room during lunch to color their part of the poster or create paper flowers.
International Club is growing and this year many new members have joined. It’s a club that is often overlooked but has a huge importance in the community.
“It’s one of the goals of our club to spread awareness of different languages, cultures and countries, so I think it’s very important,” Billmann said.
This club has been a space where many students have been able to express themselves, and the result is members being able to become fast friends with each other. Students all over Del Val agree that International Club is an integral part of the school.
“International Club is a great opportunity to learn about different languages and cultures around the world, and to expand your horizons a little bit,” senior Julius Hendricks said. “It’s also a way to do fun activities and get involved in your school community.”
International club, while small, is growing and is an important part of the school. It is a great way to learn about the world and local community alike. If you’re interested in spreading cultures through Del Val, International Club’s next meeting is on Oct. 2.
