NFL playoffs kick off this weekend

“The Delphi” reporters Owen Keane, Tyler McGuire and Brody Gale review each of the playoff teams in this year’s tournament and make predictions about their Super Bowl odds.

AFC #7 Seed: Pittsburgh Steelers
AFC #7 Seed: Pittsburgh Steelers

The Pittsburgh Steelers are led by head coach Mike Tomlin.

During the regular season, the Steelers went 10-7, winning their last game against the Baltimore Ravens 17-10 and taking them to the AFC playoffs with the seventh seed.

Kenny Pickett led the team’s offense in passing yards with 2,070, and Elandon Roberts led the team in tackles with 68.  The Steelers tallied 3,421 passing yards, 36 sacks, 16 touchdowns, 5,173 offensive yards and 29/31field goals.

Similar to the Dolphins, the Steelers have a low seed.  Pittsburgh will be playing against the Buffalo Bills, the number 2 seed.  According to ESPN, the Bills have a 78.6% chance of beating the Steelers, leaving the Steelers with a 21.4% chance of victory.  The chances of the Steelers making it to the Super Bowl are even lower.

Just as for the Dolphins, Pittsburgh was good enough to make the playoffs, but making the Super Bowl does not seem to be in the team’s favor.

AFC #6 Seed: Miami Dolphins
AFC #6 Seed: Miami Dolphins

The Miami Dolphins, led by head coach Mike McDaniel, claimed the number six seed in the AFC.

McDaniel has been with the team since 2022 and has been coaching football since 2005.  The Dolphins hold a regular season record of 11-6, which was enough to get them into the playoffs.  Miami ended the regular season with a tough loss to the Buffalo Bills with a final score of 21-14.

Tua Tagovailoa led the top offense in passing yards with 4,624, and defensive player Jalen Ramsey led the team’s defense in interceptions with three interceptions.  The team rushed for 2,308 yards, while collecting 61 touchdowns, 31 sacks and 24/28 field goals.

The Dolphins will face the Kansas City Chiefs, and the Chiefs are favored to win this cold game. The Chiefs had won their latest game 13-12, ending the season with a 10-7 record.  The Dolphins are expected to get knocked out of the playoffs very early considering they are the underdogs in the conference at the sixth seed.

The Dolphins have been good during the regular season, as well as good enough to make the AFC playoffs, however, they are not expected to make the Super Bowl.

AFC #5 Seed: Cleveland Browns
AFC #5 Seed: Cleveland Browns

Despite multiple season ending injuries claiming star players, the Browns have used their elite defense to make it to the playoffs and have built a strong argument for making a deep run.

After fracturing his throwing shoulder, starting quarterback Deshaun Watson was declared out for the season.  To nearly everyone’s surprise, 38-year-old Joe Flacco returned to help unite this team.  Flacco has set the league on fire with 1,616 yards and 13 touchdowns in only five games.  Despite this unexpected burst, the Browns still have some glaring weaknesses.

The Browns are one of the most well-rounded teams and have a defense that could put up a fight against anyone.  They also lead the league with defensive yard average, considered by most to have the best defense in the league.  As for offense, they are ranked at sixteenth.  As wide of a gap as that is, most don’t believe it’s enough to sink Cleveland’s playoff hopes.  It is, however, enough to show weakness, and it’s tough to look past the season ending injuries of Nick Chubb and Deshaun Watson.

As strong as this team is in certain positions, “The Delphi” doesn’t see the Browns making that deep of a playoff run.  Cleveland takes on the Houston Texans to start the playoffs, where the Browns are actually the favorites.  The Texans come from a much weaker division and were led by rookie quarterback C.J. Stroud after finishing 3-13 last season.  As worrying as this upturn might seem to for the Browns, they’re the much better team on paper and should comfortably win.  It is the games after this where their weaknesses will be exposed, and as admirable of a run as they’ve made, they will be eliminated.

AFC #4 Seed: Houston Texans
AFC #4 Seed: Houston Texans

The Houston Texans have launched a remarkable comeback from the lows of last season, and in doing so have made the playoffs for the first time in four years.

With the help of rookie sensation C.J. Stroud, the team has set the league ablaze with a fun and upbeat playing style.  They are also being commanded by first year head coach DeMeco Ryans, who many anticipated to be overwhelmed by the job.  As surprising as the Texans have been, a closer look at what makes them so good will help predict how they’ll do in this year’s playoffs.

Houston came into this season with hundreds of doubters and questions on the experience of the team and its draft choices.  Despite these unknowns, they stormed to the number four seed in the AFC and proved almost everyone wrong.  However, this doesn’t negate the fact that they have some pretty big flaws in their team.

Houston arrives at the playoffs from one of the weakest divisions in the entire NFL, and they did this narrowly.  As for the team they’re facing, the Cleveland Browns battled it out in the NFL’s strongest division, the AFC North, with two other playoff teams.  The last time Houston played Cleveland was in the regular season where they lost 36-21.  The stakes are quite different in this game, but Houston was already picked apart by the 38-year-old Joe Flacco.

Despite almost every odd being stacked against them, the Houston Texans managed to make a memorable season for every football fan. With that being said, this is most likely where their journey ends.  The Browns have an elite defense and still possess glimpses on offense that should be enough to end the Texans’ Super Bowl hopes early.

AFC #3 Seed: Kansas City Chiefs
AFC #3 Seed: Kansas City Chiefs

The Chiefs won the AFC West and the third seed, under head coach Andy Reid, with a record of 11-6.

Patrick Mahomes is the leading passer with 4,183 yards, and Justin Reid totaled the most tackles at 74.  The Chiefs had of 5,972 offensive yards, 4,383 passing yards, 28 sacks, 39 touchdowns and 33/35 field goals.

The Chiefs will face the Miami Dolphins, who have a record of 11-6 and are in the 6th seed.  In this game, the Chiefs are favored to win by at least a field goal with an expected 44 total points, according to Fox Sports, which also predicts that the Chiefs only have a 9.1% chance at making the Super Bowl.

The Chiefs are favored to win over the Dolphins, however they are not likely making the Super Bowl this year.

AFC #2 Seed: Buffalo Bills
AFC #2 Seed: Buffalo Bills

The Buffalo Bills managed to launch an unexpected comeback halfway through the season in order to secure not only a spot in the playoffs, but also the AFC East title.

The Bills won their last five games and are heading into the playoffs with the longest win streak in the league.  They still have some of their flaws that set them so far behind at the start of the season, but it isn’t exactly tough to see past that.

The Bills season has been a tale of two Josh Allens.  Some games he looks like the best dual-threat quarterback in the league, and other games he’s launching the ball directly into the other team’s hands.

What problems the Bills do have are helped by facing a significantly less talented team in the Pittsburgh Steelers.  The Bills have a much better team, and with Pittsburgh’s J.J. Watt out, it makes it an even harder matchup for the Steelers.  The Bills are expected to steamroll them, and that is exactly what we also predict will happen.

While the Bills aren’t Super Bowl favorites, “The Delphi” is confident that they will make a very deep run.  They have a strong defense, a top-five quarterback and an amazing winning streak.  After being knocked out in the last two playoffs, Buffalo will enter with a chip on its shoulder and power through to the AFC championship game.

AFC #1 Seed: Baltimore Ravens
AFC #1 Seed: Baltimore Ravens

The Baltimore Ravens, led by head coach John Harbaugh, have made it to the AFC playoffs.

Harbaugh has been with his team since 2008, and has led the team through many successful wins.  Harbaugh has been with the Baltimore Ravens through 147 regular season wins. This season Baltimore had a record of 13-4, ending their regular season off with a loss to the seventh seed positioned Pittsburgh Steelers.

Baltimore has been doing exceptionally well.  Quarterback Lamar Jackson is leading the team in passing yards with 3,678 yards, as well as rushing yards with 821.  Wide receiver, Zay Flowers is leading the team in receiving yards with 858 yards.  As a whole, the Ravens are doing very well with a total of 6,296 offensive yards, 3,881 passing yards, 41 sacks, 55 touchdowns and converting 32/37 field goals.

As for the Ravens making the Super Bowl, the odds are not heading in the right direction for the team.  The Ravens are predicted to have a 28% of making the Super Bowl, even with the team being at the top seed in the AFC.

Overall, the Baltimore Ravens had a good run this season, making it to the playoffs as well as the number 1 seed, however making the Super Bowl does not seem to be in their favor this season.

NFC #7 Seed: Green Bay Packers
NFC #7 Seed: Green Bay Packers

The Green Bay Packers, led by head coach Matt LaFleur, seventh seed in the NFC.

LaFleur has been coaching since 2003, when he started at Saginaw Valley State and was the offensive graduate assistant, and he joined the Packers in 2019.  LaFleur led the team to an unfortunate record of 9-8 this season, ending the regular season with a 17-9 win over the Chicago Bears.

The Packers totaled 1,905 rushing yards, 4,210 passing yards, 30 sacks, 44 touchdowns and went 27/33 on field.  Quarterback Jordan Love led the team’s offense with 4,159 passing yards, while Aaron Jones led the team with 656 rushing yards.  On the defensive side, linebacker Quay Walker had an astonishing total of 118 tackles.

The Packers will play the Dallas Cowboys in the NFL Wild Card round.  The Cowboys are favored to win this game by at least a seven-point difference, considering that they are the second seed.

Even though the Packers have been doing well their past six games, they will be going against the dominant Cowboys, leaving the Packers with a 1% chance at making the Super Bowl.

The Packers did very well this season, but playing a team as talented as the Dallas Cowboys does not leave much of a chance for making the Super Bowl.

NFC #6 Seed: Los Angeles Rams
NFC #6 Seed: Los Angeles Rams

The Los Angeles Rams finished sixth in the NFC with a record of 10 wins and seven losses.

Matthew Stanford led the team with 3,965 passing yards, Karen Williams had 1,144 rushing yards and Puka Nacua gained 1,486 receiving yards. On the defensive side of the ball, Ernest Jones led the Rams with 74 tackles, Kobie Turner had 9 sacks and Jordan Fuller had three interceptions.

The Rams play the Detroit Lions in the first round of the playoffs. The last time these two teams met each other in the regular season, the Rams took the game with a 28- 9 final score.

NFC #5 Seed: Philadelphia Eagles
NFC #5 Seed: Philadelphia Eagles

The Philadelphia Eagles finished second in the NFC East with a regular season record of 11 wins to 5 losses.

This team had a great defensive season with a huge defensive line, and the offense had a strong season as with its version of the QB sneak nicknamed the “tush-push” having a 92% completion rate.

The Eagles had a balanced offensive and defensive team. Jalen Hurts had the team’s most passing yards with 3,858 yards, D’andre Swift totaled 1,049 rushing yards and A.J. Brown had 1,456 receiving yards. On defense, Reed Blankenship made 79 tackles and 3 interceptions, and Haason Reddick had 11 sacks.

The Eagles will play the Buccaneers in their first round of the playoffs. The last time these two teams played each other in the regular season, the Eagles came out on top 25-11.

NFC #4 Seed: Tampa Bay Buccaneers
NFC #4 Seed: Tampa Bay Buccaneers

The Tampa Bay Buccaneers are led by head coach Todd Bowles.

Bowles is in his second season with the Buccaneers.  Before becoming head coach, Bowles had been the team’s defensive coordinator since 2019.  The Buccaneers had a regular season record of 9-8 and ended the season with a 9-0 win against the Carolina Panthers.

Quarterback Baker Mayfield led the team offensively with 4,044 passing yards, along with running back Rachaad White with a total of 990 rushing yards.  Defensively, wide receiver Mike Evans had a total of 1,255 receiving yards, and linebacker Lavonte David had 134 tackles.  Tampa Bay totaled 5,321 offensive yards, 1,509 rushing yards, 4,044 passing yards, 40 sacks, 37 touchdowns and went 29/31 on field goals.

The Buccaneers will play the Philadelphia Eagles in the Wild Card round.  The Philadelphia Eagles are three-point favorites to win over the Buccaneers.

NFC #3 Seed: Detroit Lions
NFC #3 Seed: Detroit Lions

One of the most likable teams in the NFL, the Detroit Lions, are heading to the playoffs for the first time since 2016.

Detroit managed to top the NFC North with an impressive record of 12-5.  They are heading to an extremely interesting matchup against the Los Angeles Rams, who is led by their former franchise quarterback Matthew Stafford.  Many fans are divided on this meetup with Stafford, and there has even been a ban set on fans bringing Detroit Lions Stafford jerseys to the stadium.  As polarizing as this decision has been among the NFL community, playing the Rams is still a tough task for the Lions to overcome.

The Lions have garnered a lot of respect around the league for their grit and tough playing style.  They started the season strong with a surprising win against last year’s champion Kansas City Chiefs.  This game was followed by several other memorable wins, including a 42-17 decimation of the Denver Broncos.  These electric performances, combined with their personable coach, have attracted attention from around the league.

The Lions/Rams game has become one of the most anticipated playoff games of the whole tournament for a multitude of reasons, but the main selling point is that the two teams traded franchise quarterbacks in 2021, where Stafford went on to win a Super Bowl with the Rams.  As for Goff, he’s developed into a solid quarterback and helped spearhead the Lions charge to the playoffs.  This clash is guaranteed to be emotional, fun and premier football.

NFC #2 Seed: Dallas Cowboys
NFC #2 Seed: Dallas Cowboys

The Dallas Cowboys earned the number one in the NFC East with a record of 12 and 5.

Dak Prescott threw for 4,516 passing yards, Tony Pollard rushed for 1,005 yards and CeeDee Lamb who gained 1,749 total receiving yards. For the defense, Damone Clark had 109 tackles, DaRon Bland caught 9 interceptions and Micah Parsons made 11 sacks.

In the first round of the playoffs, the Cowboys play the Green Bay Packers. The last time these two teams played was in 2022, when Green Bay took the game 31-28.

NFC #1 Seed: San Fransisco 49ers
NFC #1 Seed: San Fransisco 49ers

The San Francisco 49ers placed first in the NFC West with a record of 12 wins to 5 losses.

For the defense, Fred Warner led the team with 82 tackles, Nick Bosa made 10 sacks and Charvarius Ward caught five interceptions. On the other side of the ball, Brock Purdy tossed 4,280 passing yards, Christian McCaffrey ran for 1,459 rushing yards and Brandon Aiyuk gained 1,342 receiving yards.

With the top seed in the NFC, they have a first round bye and will play the lowest winning seed in the wild card round.
