Ella Genovese’s debut episode of “Inside the Huddle” discusses the wrestling team’s undefeated season.

The lights dim as “Right Now” by Van Halen blasts throughout the Hutch gym. Never before in Del Val’s history, though, have the wrestlers run out of the weight room doors to win every single match of the season.

From winning tournaments and the Hunterdon-Warren-Sussex title, to an undefeated regular season, 900 total wins, success in team sectionals and a strong run through districts and regions, this season has been nothing short of incredible.

On an individual level, eight wrestlers qualified for the Atlantic City state tournament; Lydia Bagley placed fifth in the 100-pound weight class at states; two senior wrestlers, Tye Falkenstein and Olivier Paul, reached 60 career wins; and senior Mike Hasson and sophomore Hunter Taffera placed in the HWS tournament.

In addition to individual awards, the team went undefeated this season — the only public school in the state to do so.

Head coach Andy Fitz couldn’t be prouder of his team.

“As I told the kids on the bus ride home from Rutgers, not everything in life goes your way,” Fitz said. “There’s problems here and there, but this team was perfect. Not everything in life is perfect, but the 25-26 wrestling season was perfect.”

Wrestlers were proud to have beaten rivals such as Phillipsburg and North Hunterdon. Senior wrestlers highlighted the wrestling room and post-match talks as aspects of the program they would miss most.

The wrestling team will be back next winter to continue dominating the New Jersey high school wrestling scene.
