In 2024, electric vehicles are rapidly advancing; although progress is good, some believe it could cause too many problems in today’s society.
Many people have had problems with electric vehicles, specifically with charging and battery life, such as during an event in which you cannot get electricity, such as a power failure, or if you’re in an area where there aren’t any chargers available.
A student from Saint Joe’s, Ian Hengerer, has had a problem with the battery, in which he and his family got stuck out of state and had to drive to a friend’s house to charge their car, because there weren’t any chargers around.
Del Val student Neha Sethi, whose family owns an EV, voiced her opinions about her Tesla Model Y, which is a self-driving car.
“I like electric cars because of the charging,” Sethi said. “It is cheaper and more efficient.”
Sethi has had no problems with the car and found it’s aware of its surroundings. Her family purchased the EV because it felt smooth to drive, and her family is considering getting another. She believes that they fit in today’s world and that there are no unusual problems with them.
Another common concern with the electric vehicles is their ability to travel long distances. Sethi has gone on a road trip down south with the EV and claims that there was no problem with greater distances and that it worked fine.
Another question arose when asked if she sees a problem with the EV’s exploding and catching fire.
“It is very possible for it to happen, but most people overreact with problems in the EV just because it’s an EV,” said Sethi.
Brent Conly, a driver’s education teacher, voiced his opinion on his hybrid vehicle. He explained that he has had no problems with the EV, but he has seen some cars having issues after being in flood environments, specifically after hurricane Helene.
Although most electric vehicles batteries are waterproof, if the battery becomes damaged and gets in contact with salt water, the battery can catch fire.
EV’s are at a good place in their time, but they have to be used in the right place. Although they have problems, so do all newer forms of technology.
