A new program at Del Val, the SHADOW Program, launched in February 2025 and ran through April 2025 according to director of curriculum Tara Civitillo.
The SHADOW Program, developed and conducted by Civitillo, is designed to introduce students from the sending districts to unique programs at Del Val. It also shows them to a day in the life of an ordinary student.
Annie Totten, a student from Holland Township School, who participated in the SHADOW Program, explained how the SHADOW Program has already helped her prepare for when she makes the transition from middle school to high school.
“When I become a student, I will have a better understanding of high school and know my way around better,” Totten said.
“
Students who participate in the SHADOW Program are introduced to the opportunity at Quest Night according to Totten.
When a student takes part in the program, they are paired up with a student at Del Val and experience the school day with them. The student follows them to each class, observing and learning how they navigate the school. The student also goes to unit lunch with their paired high schooler.
Civitillo plans to continue the SHADOW Program. However, there will be some slight improvements.
“For the 2025-2026 school year, we will implement a more structured schedule, running the program in January and February with designated shadow days. This will allow for a more dynamic experience by grouping participants rather than spreading them out over multiple weeks,” Civitillo said.
