Del Val junior Tyler Crowl showcased a new brass quintet at this year’s Teen Arts Festival in Hunterdon County, NJ. On Wednesday, April 29, five strong Del Val musicians represented the band program by displaying their talents to judges.

Crowl brought these musicians together to play beautiful music, performing Loch Lomond. Crowl arranged the piece so that each musician got what part they wanted and was featured in the way of their choosing.
“I’ve done most of the arranging and composing, taking a simple melody and adding it, adding other accompanying melodies and adding all the harmonies, just making my own version of the song,” Crowl said.
Crowl had help organizing the group from Thomas Hayden, Del Val band director. Hayden taught Crowl how to arrange the piece and gave the students valuable advice. Additionally, Hayden has been involved in the practices and learning moments for the students.
“Encouraging them to practice is the biggest thing,” Hayden said. “How a group like this gets good is by being really familiar with each other and playing over and over and over again together so that they can figure out each other’s nuances.”

This quintet is composed of four other students besides Crowl, who plays trumpet. The other trumpet is Luciano Zeppieri with help from Baxter Vitale playing the tuba. Playing the middle low parts is Levi Buzckowski on trombone and Rohan Calliste on euphonium. Crowl chose these band members because of his relationships with them throughout the years.
The brass quintet has performed for the community, such as at the Winter Concert in December. Senior Calliste enjoys performing in for of his community with the band.
“I feel like it [performing for an audience] helps me appreciate music more because watching people enjoy the music that we perform has really given me a music [appreciation],” Calliste said.
The brass quintet will be performing in front of the people attending the Memorial Day Luncheon and at the Spring Concert.
