Del Val’s annual Unified Theater production is underway with Bessy Kapetanakis returning as a producer, and Andrew Kapetanakis, her son, undertaking the role of director.
“Unified Theater is an inclusive performing arts program that brings together students of all abilities to create and perform a theatrical production,” Bessy said.
Unified Theater is an annual, one-night only performance where the theater and Buddies programs come together to do a cabaret style performance, featuring solos, group numbers, skits and plays.
“I’ve been doing this for four years now and I love it; it’s my favorite thing that I do in the school,” Bessy said.
Bessy started Unified Theater in the first place since she wanted to give the buddies program a chance to perform on Del Val’s stage because the Buddies program only had Unified Sports, and because she has always loved theater.
“I’ve been watching the show now for the last four years, and it’s always so fun seeing all the kids of different backgrounds come together and make some art,” Andrew said.
Unified Theater gives everyone the chance to be involved in the magic of theater, allowing students to help organize the performance, like Gail Drake, who is a student director, and Nolen Petty, who is a student choreographer.
The performance is scheduled for May 28 at 5 p.m. with free admission for all.
Unified Theater is still open to anyone who wants to join by emailing either Kapetanakis.
