In July of 2024, Jessica Campbell was hired by the Seattle Kraken as the first full-time assistant coach in the National Hockey League.
Campbell will be the primary offensive assistant to the Kraken’s head coach.
Campbell made her debut on Oct. 8, 2024 during the Seattle Kraken’s first pre-season game.
She was hired soon after Dan Bylsma, the new head coach for the Seattle Kraken, who had been hired in May.
The two had previously worked together with the Coachella Valley Firebirds, the Kraken’s minor league team, where Campbell made history once again.
When she was hired to the Firebirds, she became the first female assistant coach in the American Hockey League. Campbell worked with them from 2022-2024.
Campbell played hockey before coaching, including at Cornell University, where she was team captain. She also hit the 100 point-mark for the university.
After college, Campbell went pro where she played for the Calgary Inferno before playing in Sweden.
The Kraken have made other milestones including naming Alexandra Mandrycky as director of hockey administrations and later assistant general manager. They also named Cammi Granato the first pro woman scout in the NHL.
Before the NHL, the NFL, MLB, and NBA had all hired female coaches.
