Del Val’s award winning performing arts program is back with fall play “Back to the 80’s.”
Lisa Cartwright returns as the director of the play and is thrilled to bring the show to the Del Val stage. The play is a parody of “Back to the Future” and is full of references to several ’80’s classics. It follows Mary Fitzfry as she is taken back in time to the ’80’s by a mad scientist, Professor Emma Gelb. She unites with her mother to take on old nemeses Jeff and Bitsy.
“The heart of the play really is the story of Mary and her mom Heather,” Cartwright said. “It’s really about their relationship and how they come to an understanding of one another. They grow because of the experiences they have throughout the show.”
“Back to the 80’s” was picked on a whim, but Cartwright was drawn to it since it gives people a chance to be involved in many different ways.
“Everyone is enthusiastic about the show, everyone is having fun and we [the cast] feel very cohesive already,” Senior Claire Mcgovern said. She will star as Bitsy in the play.
The show itself is a shift from the serious themes of last year’s show, “Little Women”, to a more comedic and lighthearted tone. The characters face a comedy of errors along the way, such as: hiding from aliens, running into dancing zombies, glitchy computers and needing to break into a military base.
“Back to the 80’s” opens on Nov. 14 at seven P.M. and then shows again on Nov. 15 at two P.M. and seven P.M. Be sure to mark your dates and set your clocks to be transported back to the ’80s.
