On Oct. 17, Del Val held their annual Terrier Athletic Hall of Fame induction. Every year the Terrier Athletic Hall of Fame committee receives nominations of alumni, and they chose who will be inducted that year.

The inductees’ yearbooks out on display. Attendees were welcome to look through them, or go on the displayed iPads, to see past inductees.

Past boys’ basketball coach, Ron Burd, was the first inductee to be recognized at the ceremony. His son accepted the award in his honor. Coach Burd led the boys’ basketball team from 1963-1993. He carried them to win seven conference championships and one county championship. Over his career he had 425 wins- the highest in Del Val boys’ basketball history. In 1977, he was inducted into the NJICA/NJSCA Hall of Fame.

Allen Becker, class of 1956, was inducted for his talent in football and basketball. In his honor, his wife, Carolyn Becker, and his son, Tyler Becker, accepted the award. During his time as a student, Del Val had yet to be constructed, he attended Frenchtown High School. In high school, he was a key member of the back to back state champion football team and conference champion basketball teams. He was named All State as a senior and All County twice.

Jack Weiss, class of 1964, was inducted for his performance in football, basketball and baseball. In football, he was named All State and All County; basketball named All State twice and All County twice; baseball named All State twice and All County three times. For two seasons, he batted over .400.

Lane Cyphers Sr., class of 1965, was inducted for his achievements in football, basketball and baseball. During his time at Del Val, he was a 10x varsity lettered athlete. In baseball he was named All State Group 1 three times, averaged over 12 strikeouts a game his junior and senior year, had a pitching record of 22-4 and batted over .400 for two seasons.

James Leroy Moore, class of 1972, was inducted for his talents in football, basketball and baseball. In his honor, his brother accepted the award. For football he was named All County; basketball named All Hunterdon County; baseball named Group 1 All State twice, and had 105 career hits. During his time at Del Val he was a 8x varsity lettered athlete.

John Pasterkiewicz, class of 1988, was inducted for his skill in wrestling. In 1988, he was the NJ State Champion, was named Region Champion, District Champion and 2x winner of the Outstanding Wrestler Award.

Chris Fennell, class of 2012, was inducted for his feats in football, basketball and lacrosse. His parents accepted the award in his honor, as he is currently serving in the U.S. Navy. During his time at Del Val, he was a 10x varsity lettered athlete. In football he was a 2x All State Group 2 and 2x All County; lacrosse he was 2x All State and 2x All County. After Del Val, he went on to attend the Naval Academy, where he was inducted into the US Naval Academy Hall of Fame and named 3x All American.

During an intermission between inductions, ceremony attendees enjoy a dinner provided by Marinelli’s Pizza. There was a variety of pastas, along with salad, chicken parmesan and bread.

Rob Godown, class of 1987, spoke on behalf of the 1987 wrestling team. Coached by Vince Fitz, the team was the 1987 Group 2 State Champions, Central Jersey Group 2 Sectional Champions, Delaware River Conference Champions and ranked fourth in the state of New Jersey. They ended their season with a record of 20-2.

Bill Aschenbach, class of 1988, spoke on behalf of the 1988 wrestling team. Coached by Vince Fitz, the team was the 1988 Group 2 State Champions, Central Jersey Group 2 Sectional Champions, Delaware River Conference Champions and ranked fourth in the state of New Jersey. They ended their season with a record of 21-2.

Coach Dave Kirschenmann’s 2011 boys’ soccer team was inducted for making school history. During their run, they went undefeated during their conference season and were conference champions. They ranked 19th in the state of New Jersey, finished their season with a 18-2 record and were the 2011 Hunterdon Warren Sussex Champions. The team was the first and only team at Del Val to win the tournament.

Coach William Petty’s 1974 and 1975 boys’ cross country teams were inducted for their hard work and dedication. The 1974 team placed second in the NJ Group 2 State Tournament, the Central Jersey Group 2 Sectional Champions and Delaware River Conference Champions. They finished their season with a record of 16-0. The 1975 team placed third in the NJ Group 2 State Tournament, the Central Jersey Group 2 Champions and Delaware River Conference Champions. They finished the season with a record of 16-0.

Abby Eckert is a junior and this is her second year working for The Delphi. She is Co-President of Quill & Scroll Honor Society. Along with being a managing editor, she also is the podcast editor. In her free time, she likes to play field hockey, volunteer for Habitat for Humanity, listen to music and paint. In the future, she hopes to pursue a career in either forensics or psychology.
