Tyler, the Creator released his new album, “CHROMAKOPIA,” on Oct. 28. It is compelling and covers a wide range of genres, from jazz to mainstream rap. The album includes multiple features, including Daniel Caesar, Childish Gambino, Teezo Touchdown and Sexyy Red.
“CHROMAKOPIA” dives deep into the personal story of Tyler, the Creator, and reflects on his relationship with his father, past romantic partners and himself. Tyler, the Creator is known for his ability to create a world within his albums. This was apparent in the aesthetic and cultural success of his last album, “Call Me If You Get Lost.” “CHROMAKOPIA” didn’t fall short of this standard.
He created a dark and mature tone with the release of this album. He assumed the character of a disturbing figure dressed in a green uniform with an exotic haircut. This was seen in various promotional materials and on the album’s cover. The first time this character was seen in action was in the preview of the first song off the album, “St. Chroma.” Tyler, the Creator is seen marching, in black and white, into a shipping crate, which then blows up, turning the video colored.
This character was inspired by Chroma the Great, a conductor who brought color to the world in the story “The Phantom Tollbooth” by Norton Juster. Tyler, the Creator’s take on this was that eliminating unnamed artists would bring color into the world.
This promo was followed by the third track off the album “Noid.” The track focused on Tyler, the Creator’s conflict with fans, and his fear of them consuming him, making him paranoid. The song title itself is a play on the word paranoid. The song samples the Zambian band “Ngozi Family” and their song “Nizakupanga Ngozi.” The song talks about paranoia within a household, which fits into the narrative of “Noid.”
“CHROMAKOPIA” is Tyler, The Creator’s seventh studio album. The digital version of “CHROMAKOPIA” has 14 songs, with physical versions containing unused tracks and verses. Overall, “CHROMAKOPIA” is an amazing album that expresses numerous different feelings, while still producing songs that will have replayability for a long time.
A day before the album’s release, a listening party was held in the Intuit Dome in Los Angeles, where “CHROMAKOPIA” was played in full. The show ended up being sold out in minutes, with numerous celebrities attending to hear the album for the first time with fans.
The listening party only increased excitement as fans waited for the album to be released. “CHROMAKOPIA” received over 85 million official streams on its first day, displaying fans’ dedication to Tyler, the Creator, and his albums.
