Del Val announced their Winter Musical, “Big Fish” on Nov. 6, 2024.
“Big Fish” is a drama, romance, fairytale/fantasy musical, first performed in 2013, 10 years after the 2003 film was released.
“Big Fish” is based on Daniel Wallace’s 1998 novel, “Big Fish: A Novel of Mythic Proportions.” The film version was written by John August and directed by well-known director, Tim Burton.
August would go on to write the musical, with music and lyrics by Andrew Lippa.
The musical takes place in both present times as well as the 1950’s in Alabama, and the lead characters include Edward, Will and Sandra Bloom.
The musical had its first preview for Broadway on Sept. 5, 2013, before opening Oct. 6, 2013 in the Neil Simon Theatre. However, it did not run for long, closing Dec. 29, 2013, after 34 previews and 98 performances. It had a total gross of $10,858,194.
The show was nominated for several awards, including Outstanding Choreography in a Broadway Show, Outstanding Music, Outstanding Featured Actor in a Musical and more. The musical did not win any of the nominations.
This year, Del Val’s musical has a new director, Carrie Snodgrass.
“It was very exciting, it was something I could give back to the community,” Snodgrass said. “Something I actually know how to do.”
