In the present day, good news is rarely seen on television. It can be hard to find, and good news feels few and far between. However, good things are constantly happening around us. Here are some stories that might brighten your day.
Nihal Tammana from Monroe, New Jersey, started a nonprofit to recycle lithium batteries and keep them out of landfills. His efforts, which began in 2020, have recycled more than 625,000 batteries around the world. Recycle My Battery and Tammana’s efforts continue to impact environments around the world.
Hatchlings at the Philadelphia Zoo
Galapagos tortoises are a critically endangered species, with roughly 15,000 members remaining around the world. Thanks to the Association of Zoos and Aquariums, Mommy, the mother turtle, laid 16 eggs at the Philadelphia Zoo, four of which have hatched. The first of the four baby tortoises was born on Feb. 27 to approximately 100-year-old parents. The three other eggs were monitored by the zoo’s care team until they hatched shortly after. The four hatchlings made their first appearance to the public on April 23.
A waitress named Betty from Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania was finally able to retire at age 81 thanks to Tamie Konizer and random strangers online. After hearing her story, Tamie started a GoFundMe to make sure Betty wouldn’t work for the rest of her life. Generous strangers raised more than $319,000 over three days. Betty has since retired from her job.
The Dalian Sun Asia Ocean World Zoo in China celebrated the birthday of one of its animals. Shuangshuang the walrus was presented with a cake made of fish and a bucket of boba after she blew out her candle for her eighth birthday. The zookeepers also sang Shuangshuang “Happy Birthday.”
