The movie rendition of “Wicked’s” first act was released in Nov. 2024. A year later, on Nov. 21, “Wicked: For Good” will premier on the big screen. “Wicked: For Good” is the movie adaptation of Act II of “Wicked” and is highly anticipated with its new costumes, cast members and sets.
Leading actresses Ariana Grande and Cynthia Erivo are returning to the roles of Glinda and Elphaba. There is the possibility that the character Dorothy from “The Wizard of Oz” will make a full debut in this movie; however, an actor has not been confirmed for this role. The trailer shows a confirmed appearance of the Lion, Scarecrow and Tin Man.
Many aspects of the movie are similar to the plot of the book and musical. All original songs from the musical will return in the film in addition to new songs, including “The Girl in the Bubble” and “No Place Like Home.”
The film has shown appreciation to its broadway roots, as seen in the cameo from Idina Menzel and Kristen Chenoweth in the first movie, who played Elphaba and Glinda in the original musical.
Actress and singer Grande is reentering her role as Glinda, who is set to gain her full title, “Glinda the Good Witch.” She has stated many times that she loves her role and is very excited for the sequel.
Erivo, an actress and singer, is also excited to step back into her role as Elphaba, who will also gain her title as the “Wicked Witch of the West.” Erivo is loved by many for her role and impactful voice in “Wicked.”
Erivo has stated that she wants to promote her title and make her the lead actress in the movie rather than co-actress. Grande has been supporting her through this change to help her achieve this title.
The trailer’s release sparked mixed reactions.
Freshman Evelyn Mansfield believes ‘Wicked: For Good” is going to be an overall good movie and very popular; however, she does not think it will be better than the first.
“…It has Ariana Grande in it, it was a musical, it was very heavily promoted and the songs were good,” Mansfield said.
Freshman Addison Simini also showed her love for the first movie.
“Wicked was a spectacular film,” Simini said. “I loved how the movie included more context than the musical.”
The wardrobe of “Wicked: For Good” has been speculated upon, as it is designed by Paul Tazwell, who was also the designer in the first film. Tazwell has won many awards for his work, especially on “Wicked.” He has also worked on Broadway musical like “Hamilton.” It is hoped the effort Tazwell has previously put into his designs will continue to enhance the Land of Oz.
With the release of the first movie and the upcoming release of the book sequel by Gregory Maguire, “Wicked” has reentered the light. The movie is said to be similar to the book and musical; however, it is hard to perfect an adaptation. Maguire has said that he loves how the movie has been adapted and feels like it is a great way to express the meaning.
