Del Val has created a new club schedule where groups of three clubs have their meetings at the same time during Unit Lunch. It was added to everyone’s calendar at the beginning of the school year at Del Val.
The clubs now have a schedule where specific clubs have their meeting at the same time, which is said to organize calendars and lead to less conflicts. Some of the club groupings are Art Club, Environmental Club and International Club or FBLA, Robotics, and Model UN.
Principal Micheal Kays observed throughout his years that many conflicts arise when students have various club meetings at the same time.
“I think as more clubs were developing, there were a lot of student conflicts,” Kays said. “We want students to be able to explore a lot of different opportunities, but that also leads to a scheduling nightmare that comes when there are multiple club meetings on the same day.”
Prior to creating the new schedule, Kays gathered all of the club advisors, showed them a blueprint of the schedule and got their perspectives. They all agreed on a new club schedule so students could participate in multiple clubs without as many conflicts.
One student, Kairi Lambert, who is involved in Art Club, Book Club, Key Club and Games Club, shared her input about the new club schedule.
“With the new schedule, though it’s more organized, it’s disappointing because I wish I could join more clubs,” Lambert said. “But since they’re on the same days, I have to miss.”
There are positive aspects to this new club schedule, like organization; however, there are still scheduling conflicts for students involved in clubs that aren’t grouped together.
“Now, I always know when my meetings are gonna be because it’s on the calendar,” Lambert said. “So, if Mr. Fortino doesn’t post the meetings, I still see it on the calendar.”
