Del Val’s National Honor Society, a student service organization, partnered with the American Red Cross to host its annual fall blood drive on Nov. 13.
During this event, students, staff, and community members donated their blood to the American Red Cross. The Red Cross supplied the tools and phlebotomists to take the blood.
“It’s the American Red Cross that does this,” NHS advisor Bessy Kapetanakis said. “They come prepared with all the stuff. We offer the space, and we offer the volunteers.”
For someone to get their blood drawn, they needed to be at least 16-years-old. 16-year-olds need parental consent to donate; however, those 17 and above don’t need parental consent.
“Honestly, I think everyone should donate blood if they’re eligible to because they have the ability to help somebody out,” senior and NHS member Taylor Negrin said.
Kapetanakis explained the importance of hosting these blood donations.
“I mean blood is life… I think every bag of blood can save five people,” Kapetanakis said.
Negrin described how donating blood can rewarding.
“You feel like you did something good,” Negrin said.
For those who missed out on the fall blood drive, Del Vals’ NHS chapter will host another blood drive in May.
