During a Monday Night Football matchup on Jan. 2, Buffalo Bills safety, Damar Hamlin, suffered a nearly fatal injury that brought the NFL and sports community together.

Hamlin suddenly collapsed after what appeared to be a routine tackle on Bengals wide receiver Tee Higgins. It was a rare, scary sight for NFL fans watching as ambulances entered the field, preparing to give chest compressions on a NFL player.

Bills athletic trainers and EMS rapidly acted on scene and saved Damar’s life. He was then transported to the University of Cincinnati Medical Center in critical condition.

While Hamlin remained in critical condition, he made exponential progress towards his recovery before eventually being released and visiting his teammates.

“If you get a chance to show some love today, do it. It won’t cost you nothing,” tweeted Hamlin.

Through Hamlin’s nearly tragic injury, the sports community has rallied around him and raised millions of dollars towards Hamlin’s Chasing M’s foundation.  The morning of Jan. 2, Hamlin’s Chasing M’s Foundation had a donation goal of $2,500. As of Jan. 17, the sports community raised over 8.9 million dollars.
