Starting in fall of 2024, Del Val will have its first Quidditch team, coached by gym teacher Marty White.
Many people know quidditch as a fantasy sport from the beloved novel series, “Harry Potter.” However, Quidditch is a real sport coming to Del Val.
To play, seven players mounted on broomsticks attempt to steal the opponent’s quaffle, or volleyball. Capturing the quaffle and entering the opponent team’s territory to throw into their hoops earns 10 points. Obtaining the golden snitch results in earning 30 points. The team with the most points at the time the snitch is caught wins the match.
Quidditch is a contact sport, as it contains many similarities from dodgeball, rugby and tag. As the first coed Del Val sports team, girls and boys are excited for this new team.
“I am really looking forward to joining the team,” Brooklyn Liskowacki said. “I’m happy there is a new sport coming to Del Val, and it should be fun. I’m also happy to know it’s coed. I think that’ll help bring our school together.”
Equipment, including uniforms and quaffles, will be provided by the school. Students are responsible for purchasing their own broomsticks.
“I am honored to be the new Quidditch team’s head coach,” White said. “I think there will be a good turnout of players, as a new sport is always exciting.”
The first preseason practice will be held on Aug. 22, 2024. Students planning on attending are to meet in the Hutch Gym and wait for further instruction.
