Unified Basketball is a basketball program for all Del Val students, including differently abled students. According to head coach Daniel Casserly, the program has been around for at least ten years. The team was recently preparing for its first game of the season against Hunterdon Central.
“We have a lot of fun and we work hard at practice,” said Casserly.
The team has been practicing since early December. Casserly noted that players Tommy Bentley, Charlie Bentley, and Robert McGlothlin have been performing well.
The team took on Hunterdon Central on Jan. 14 in a very exciting and close game. At the end of the first quarter, Del Val took an early lead with a score of 17-4.
By halftime, Hunterdon Central began to make a comeback, scoring 16 more points, while Del Val only scored four.
Del Val took a small lead at the end of the third quarter, leading to a score of 35-32, and in the fourth quarter, both teams continued to score. Del Val ended up winning the game 49-48.
A notable player was Charlie Bentley, who played an excellent game by scoring 27 points. Tommy Bentley also played well, scoring 10 points, and Garrett Stuve, a senior, scored a total of 10 points.
Unified Basketball has a page on Del Val’s website for those interested in learning more about the program.
“At the end of the day, the program is all about having a lot of fun,” said Casserly.
If you are looking to support the program, the team’s senior night is on Jan. 29.
