The Delphi was on site for Del Val’s winter pep rally, which featured the third annual Wing Bowl and the 19th annual Gold Rush wrestling match against Hunterdon Central. Check out The Delphi’s most recent video to see all of the action.
The Wing Bowl kicked off this year’s winter pep rally. Competitors included senior Maggie Simpson, senior Alex Apgar, sophomore Nicky Reynolds, junior Simon Wismer, math supervisor Ryan Murphy and history teacher Micheal DePaolo.
DePaolo won, eating 26 wings in total. Close behind DePaolo was Wismer, who ate 25 wings.
“I thought it would be something fun. I was tired of seeing Apgar win every year so, wanted to switch it up a bit,” DePaolo said.
Through donations to this tournament’s competitors, over 1,000 dollars was raised for local food banks this year.
After coaches and captains spoke to the crowd, the teacher inflatable costume race ended the event. Sean Lynch, Dan Casserly, Murphy and Dana Stem all competed. In the end, it was Casserly who took the win.
That night, the Del Val Terriers wrestling team took on the Hunterdon Central Red Devils in the annual Gold Rush match.
“Everybody was out there, cheering, supportive. I thought it was a great environment and atmosphere to for all our students to participate in the match and be a part of the entire community,” athletic director Lance Jacobs said.
The Terriers had multiple pins that match, including junior Marcus Gary, who changed the number of wins that night, following in a Del Val wrestling tradition. Sophomore Hunter Taffera was awarded Del Val Wrestling’s Pin Dawg achievement for the match.
“It really couldn’t have gone any better,” Taffera said. “Like, all throughout the lineup, like everyone did an amazing job. I feel really good myself with getting that pin.”
Del Val, led by coach Andy Fitz, won 64 – 12 continuing the team’s undefeated season. Fitz started the Gold Rush tradition at Del Val.
“To see where [Gold Rush] is at 19 years later is just remarkable,” Fitz said.
