Understanding the Importance of Social Media
May 7, 2020
The world of social media consumes many aspects of our daily lives, whether we like to admit it or not. Many view social media in a negative light, thinking that it’s ultimately making people less intelligent and more lazy, but many tend to overlook the good that can come from such technology.
Social media platforms such as Twitter, Instagram, Snapchat, or Facebook connect people in a multitude of ways, all with the click of a button. Not only does it allow individuals to easily communicate and connect with their friends and family, but it also opens them up to a world of new people, who they may never have been able to meet without such platforms. People are able to stay connected even if they are miles away.
Social media is also a great way to find and share ideas, opinions and general information quickly to the public. In terms of business, social media is a way to connect to customers as well as advertise. Sites like Kickstarter have been able to directly fund, and get the word out for, small businesses just taking off. This goes for charities as well, as sites such Gofundme are able to raise millions of dollars for those in need and raise awareness in the process.
Social media has been associated with negative social effects for many young kids and teens, but such platforms can have their benefits. For many youths, social media allows them to have a place to express themselves and connect with others with similar interests. For those who are shy and have a hard time talking to people, social media can allow them to feel more comfortable chatting behind a screen.
It’s important to be aware of the significance of the internet and social media. Though not perfect, the internet allows for instantaneous and convenient communication. Without a doubt, both the internet and social media have changed the world and will continue to change it for years to come.
