The weather is warming up and it is time for spring sports again. The golf team is preparing to hit the course with an exciting spring season.
The team is shaping up to be strong, thanks to a balanced roster with new and improved experiences across the lineup. Combining steady returning varsity players, and quickly developing underclassmen, the team is aiming for a successful run in the Valley Division.
“I think we will be competing for the Valley Division title this year,” coach David Kirschenmann said. “We should do pretty well against most of our competition.”
Leading the team are three of last season’s top contributors: Amel Bontempo, Finn Tribus and Ryan Brereton. All three boys competed regularly in the varsity matches last season and bring valuable experience to this season’s lineup, according to Kirschenmann.
They are joined by Nicholas Reynolds, who saw limited varsity action last year, and Reilly Reszetylo, who has quickly worked his way into the team’s top six.
Golf matches are structured differently than many other sports. Each team sends out six players to compete against another school’s top six golfers. At the end, the four lowest scores from each team are counted and the lowest combined score wins.
In addition to regular matches, the team is looking forward to several key events on the schedule, including the Cherry Valley Invitational which includes a scenic course.
Players are also excited for the Central Jersey Group 1 Sectional Tournament in May, where they hope to do well.
The girls team is also making another showing this year. It is still in the developmental phase, with their only returning player with match experience being Elissa Fisher, making it difficult to include separate girls matches, especially with only one coach.
However, Fisher is expected to compete in tournaments this season as well while the other four girls focus on improvement with the expectation of getting some matches next season.
As the season progresses, the team’s combination of experience and growth will make it an exciting one.
