Until Dr. Gilbert’s return in late December, James Shriner will be returning from his full-time 2022 retirement, filling her position as Supervisor of Security, Safety and Student Conduct.
Shriner was first inspired to work in a school setting at a young age. Shriner looked up to many of his teachers and their work in school.
“When I was a kid growing up I played a lot of sports and I always admired our coaches who were teachers in the building and I wanted to follow their path,” Shriner said.
Shriner attended Seton Hall University where he got a degree in physical education and health. Shriner later went to Kean University to get his administration degree.
After his retirement, Shriner decided to start per diem work.
“Per diem is where teachers and administrators can come back and work by the day in a district when there is a need,” Shriner said.
In his per diem work, Shriner has worked in different districts filling temporary roles. Shriner went to Governor Livingston, MillBurn and Whippany Park High School to fill vice principal and athletic director roles. He also spent months at Middlesex County Magnet School, in East Brunswick, working with trade students.
“I have had the opportunity to work in all different parts of the state and I have seen all different types of schools and how they function, but this is my favorite one,” Shriner said.
Throughout his time working in different districts, Shriner explains that he enjoys the community, campus and atmosphere at Del Val.
“What’s unique about Del Val is that everything is right here on one campus. I love how everyone is on one campus,” Shriner said.“I am glad to be back here and glad to see all the faces I saw four years ago. People are still here after four years which means this is a pretty good place.”
With being back in a school setting and having a surplus of experience with students, Shriner reflects on the New Jersey cell phone policy. He believes it is benefiting students, allowing them to have more social interactions.
“Take advantage of the cell phone policy. I think it’s the best thing they can do for young kids, it gives them an opportunity to actually talk to their peers and I’m excited to see how it’s going to evolve,” Shriner said.
During his time back at Del Val, Shriner wants to promote a safe and opening campus environment for students to learn while keeping his part of administration in order.
“My goal is to keep everything smooth like Dr. Gilbert had it, and when she comes back to leave her in good hands,” Shriner said.
