With the presidential election coming up, many celebrities have voiced their opinions and endorsed candidates. Should these endorsements have an effect on how the American people vote?
Over the past few weeks, some of the biggest names have come out to support the candidate they wish to win. Donald Trump gained support from Kid Rock and Hulk Hogan, and Kamala Harris received support from big names ranging from Barack Obama and Taylor Swift.
According to national polling done by ABC News, the race is extremely close and shows Harris ahead by only 2.8 percent, so every vote matters for each candidate. One celebrity endorsement who may have the ability to swing the polls is Taylor Swift.
With Swift currently having over 92 million monthly listeners on Spotify and a strong fan base, her recent endorsement of Harris may have some effect on the election. Del Val freshman Samantha Calabro, a fan of Swift’s, expanded on the matter.
“Most of the time Swifties will follow in Taylor’s track, so I definitely think 90% of Swifties are probably going to vote for Harris now,” Calabro said.
However, this influence from celebrities may make voters more likely to vote based on other’s opinions instead of considering the policies of each candidate.
Eden DeLorenzo, a Del Val sophomore, was concerned by this.
”I don’t think it’s fair that they use their power or their status to get us to vote for their party,” DeLorenzo said.
However, many voters are aware of this conflict and plan not to let these endorsements affect their decisions.
Del Val senior Charles Bentley explained how he plans on voting.
“In the end, people should just vote for who they want to,” Bentley said.
Hopefully celebrities don’t majorly affect how people vote, and they are able to make the best choice for themselves.
