Students in Del Val’s Biomedical Academy were invited to participate in the Hands-on Immersive Day, which was held at the St. Lukes Warren Campus on March 26.
There were eight 15-minute stations for students to rotate throughout the day with different clinical activities. These sessions were designed to allow students to explore a variety of healthcare careers.
Students learned about some of the skills involved as they were guided by a range of medical professionals. Along with the medical equipment provided for students to practice, there were volunteers who took time out of their day to participate in the program.
Through this field trip, students also received information about the various St. Luke’s volunteer programs available during the summer.
-
Students watch the demonstration of how to properly use a tourniquet. During the first station, “Stop the Bleeding,” they identified the injured area and practiced using a tourniquet.
-
Students practice applying a tourniquet and putting gauze in open wounds at the “Stop the Bleeding” station. They learned that this is used in extreme emergency situations.
-
Students practice CPR on fake mannequins to the beat of the song “Stayin’ Alive.” The instructors showed the students the proper and effective way to perform the maneuver.
-
In the community health station, students talk with professionals about what is expected during an interview for St. Luke’s volunteer programs. Students learned helpful job interview tips and practiced interviewing through a fun, hands on station with prizes.
-
Junior Lillyana DeMartino holds a flexible endoscope, a tool students saw during the respiratory health station. The group received an explanation on when and how this type of equipment is used.
-
Senior Lucas Schulze listening to a patients breaths to hear what the heathy lungs of a volunteer sound like. In this session, students also learned about the importance of respiratory health and the risks of smoking and vaping through a demonstration with a St. Luke’s respiratory therapist.
-
Student practice administering IV’s on a fake arm, a mandatory task in nursing school. The instructor walked students through the process and precautions that are needed to properly place an IV in the “Nursing Education” station.
-
Senior Kadence Melamud performing a laparoscopy in order to practice surgical techniques. It was a challenging but fun activity for students to try out.
-
An athletic trainer demonstrates how to splint an arm. This final station was centered around athletic injuries. Along with learning how to stable a broken limb, students were able to put on goggles that replicate a concussion to see how it alters performance.
