Sage Hason’s love for singing and performing started when she was young, inspired by her parents singing together throughout her childhood. Music enchanted her and would later lead her to win a prestigious award, Outstanding Soloist, granted to her by the organization SingStrong.
SingStrong is a public charity that hosts a cappella singing competitions similar to those depicted in the “Pitch Perfect” films.
Hason, a sophomore, was granted the award because of her featured solo in Vox Blue’s performance of the song “Ribs” by Lorde. Her award marked a major milestone for Vox Blue as it was the first time it had been granted to a Del Val student since Vox Blue began performing in SingStrong’s competitions.
“’Ribs’ was a song I always connected to, even before I got the solo,” Hason said. “It really has that emotional aspect that connects childhood with adulthood. That song shows what it’s like going into high school. It shows the transition from being a child to an adult, and I think it’s just a perfect example of how high schoolers feel.”
Hason has been singing for her entire life as both a hobby and a coping mechanism during COVID and other times of struggle.
“I don’t know what my life would be without singing,” Hason said.
Hason’s first time singing, when she was only 1-year-old, was just a series of sounds and vowels; however, it paved the way for her to continue singing throughout her life.
“My inspiration [to start singing] is definitely my dad because he has always been there for me, and he’s always helped me,” Hason said.
Hason has been part of the school’s musical and choir programs for the last two years, including Vox Blue, Del Val’s a cappella choir. She decided to join Vox Blue after watching its performance at the District Arts Festival when she was in middle school.
“I came to the District Arts Festival for chorus, and I just watched Julia Burchill on stage singing a solo,” Hason said. “Everyone was watching her and I just thought that was the coolest thing ever.”
This inspired Hason to shine on the Del Val stage in all things singing. As a freshman, Hason’s musical talents landed her two featured singing roles in Del Val’s musical “Big Fish,” where she played the witch.
Hason is currently playing an Electric Skate in Del Val’s production of “The SpongeBob Musical,” where she sings the energetic rock number “Bikini Bottom Boogie.”
Hason will perform onstage in Del Val’s production. “The SpongeBob Musical” opened March 6, and tickets are available for purchase for March 13 and 14.
