Senior cheerleader Sara Matthews achieved a significant milestone by earning a coveted spot on the NJ Cheer and Dance Coaches Association All-State Team for the 2024 season.

This prestigious team provides a platform for seniors from across New Jersey to showcase their skills through video submissions and interviews, with the added allure of scholarship opportunities for outstanding cheerleaders.

For Matthews, the journey to making the team was similar to navigating a rigorous college application process, requiring dedication, perseverance and a showcase of her talents. Reflecting on her achievement, Matthews expressed a mix of pride and relief, emphasizing the difficult nature of the selection process.

“Making the team was probably harder than any college application I’ve had to fill out,” Matthews said. “It feels like a weight off my shoulders.”

For Matthews, the journey was not without its challenges, but the outcome validated her efforts and dedication.

Looking ahead, Matthews eagerly anticipates the upcoming luncheon in May, where she and her fellow teammates will gather at a country club to receive recognition for their hard work.

“I don’t know anyone, but I’m looking forward to coming together with the rest of the girls,” Matthews said. “Ever since freshman year when I saw the seniors get it, I wanted to apply for it [the team].”

Matthews’ is glad that her perseverance paid off. Beyond personal accolades, Matthews hopes that her selection will not only raise her own profile, but also shine a spotlight on Del Val and its cheerleading team.

As she embarks on the next chapter of her journey, Matthews remains steadfast in her commitment to excellence, serving as an inspiration to her peers and a testament to the power of chasing one’s dreams.
