After 11 years, former student Natalie Calcavecchio returns to Del Val as one of the new math teachers. This year, Calcavecchio is teaching Algebra I and Algebra II.

“I’ve always really loved math and I also always loved the idea of helping people,” Calcavecchio said. “Eventually I came to the conclusion that teaching was the perfect combination of both of those.”

Calcavecchio attended Del Val from 2011 to 2015, where she participated in multiple clubs, including National Honor Society and Math Club. Calcavecchio was also a tri-sport athlete. She participated in volleyball, basketball, and track and field during her time at Del Val.

“I really love to play volleyball, I’ve coached volleyball in the past,” Calcavecchio said.”I had a lot of good times playing sports and it’s where I met most of my friends.”

After graduating from Del Val, Calcavecchio went to Rutgers University and went on to teach at Central Jersey College Prep Charter School for five years before coming to teach at Del Val.

“I really loved the atmosphere in this school, everyone is very prideful in Del Val and I really loved the welcoming community,” Calcavecchio said. “A lot of the teachers from when I was here are still here to this day.”

Among the teachers she had, Andy Fitz, veteran math teacher, was one of her favorites.

Looking into the new school year, Calcavecchio is ready to return to Del Val as a teacher.

“[I’m looking forward to] getting even more comfortable with my students,” Calcavecchio said. “I’m excited to integrate myself into the community here.”
